Farm Update 5/15/11

We are finally all caught up here on the farm...well, not quite. There are a few more things we have to do, and then some more after that, but soon. Well, I am convinced that buckwheat is my best friend or at least my favorite cover/mulch crop. It grows really fast, it's shallow rooted (which makes it easy to pull up and lay down next to plants as a mulch, when inter-cropping), it's an excellent crop for bees (lots of pretty flowers) and it's a great source of nitrogen. Last season I planted it with the corn and when they were both about a foot tall, I pulled all the buckwheat up, and laid it down at the base of the corn for an instant mulch...it made some very happy corn, well watered and weed free! The crops are doing very well, and all of this rain and warmth has helped a lot! Our squash and cucumbers are doing very well, as well as the tomato plants (I gave them the buckwheat treatment, and it's going very well). We should have kale very soon (got a late start...) and carrots. The beets are ready to start harvesting! Beans and corn are doing great, and so are the strawberries, well, except for the ones that our chickens got into today. At least they have judgement, they only went for the ripe ones. We do have really smart chickens here...well, not really, but they lay awesome eggs! This will be the first Friday of the Wilkesboro market! We are excited to see the turn out! Anything extra listed below will be available for Tuesday's drop-off at Talias, or Saturday at the Boone Market. There will be some things Friday night at the market as well.
