Farm Update 6/12/11

Isn't it great when you finally get to eliminate one of life's stress's? Recently we went all out and purchased the roller type shower curtain hooks. What a pleasure! You might be wondering what this has to do with the farm. Well, it has a lot to do with it. My day starts off with a shower, and normally I would be fighting the shower curtain hooks, or picking them up in the morning before I went out to tend to all of the veggies and do our planning and harvesting. But not anymore! The roller type hooks are great, and my morning is considerably more peaceful, which leads to higher quality veggies and chicken for you. There has been a lot of rain this week, and so far it has all been needed. We did get a hail storm Friday evening, but I have not seen any damage to the crops so far. We have lost a row of yellow pepper plants, mainly due to the wetness I think. There should be plenty of time to recoup. Today we had green beans, okra, mustard greens, squash, grilled beets and swiss chard for lunch/dinner. It is so nice to finally have some green beans! I always look forward to the first picking because it is easy to keep up with and pick the real small beans, which I like the best! Our okra has decided to produce a little, although the plants are only about a foot tall. Not sure what that is all about, but the okra was good! I am running out of time to get sweet potato slips in the ground, but it has been difficult to find them this year. We do have the purple sweet potatoes started, and they are doing well.If you haven't had a chance to visit the Open Air Market in Wilkesboro, I highly recommend it! It has been doing quite well, with a large vendor and customer turnout. This week we will have our same deliveries, so if you need anything extra, please email us and let us know what, when and where. Have a great week! Enjoy the coolness! -The Emmons'
